Heatwave

2020

Approximately 2.4m by 1.5m.

Acrylic on paper.

Heatwave plays on the idea of the subconscious and mark making. It is the result of my research into Surrealist processes and colour theory.

In my practice I explore abstraction primarily through painting. I would describe my work as being both expressive and energetic as well as having a core focus on colour theory. More recently I am looking at different processes of abstraction and making marks in different ways. I am looking at the subconscious mind and automatic drawing as a starting point for my paintings which was introduced by the Surrealist movement. I am interested in the relationship between making marks and movement and achieve this by listening to music whilst painting. This ensures a range of movement and therefore I can achieve more dynamic mark making. I love creating large scale acrylic paintings as a collective series of work. I chose acrylics as it is quick to dry so I can layer up the paint creating textures in a more suggestive way.
