Block-head

2020

50cm x 50cm x 50cm

Plaster, gypsum, wood with emulsion and acrylic

I started working on Block Head in 2019 and this was a reaction to what I saw of Primitivism, the work of Stanislav Szukalski and the Polynesian monoliths of Easter Island.  Block head is provincial, primitive and naive in style. Less is more, in this case. Colour was not important other than to provide a sharp contrast to create greater visual impact. The eyes were an after, thought which seemed to bring Block Head to life.

As a Contemporary Artist, painter and sculptor, I like to experiment with and employ different techniques.

My work incorporates a distinctive, bold abstract style with naturally flowing lines and marked contrasts. Influenced by Japanese art, my creations are an expression of my freedom and are spontaneous, unplanned, and unpredictable. Although unique, these always appear to have similar underlying characteristics attributable to my style.

Antiquities, archaeological sites, and fossils inspire me and provide a rich and varied resource for ideas which inform my art. My broad interest in psychology, science and technological developments also stimulate my enquiring mind and encourage me to break new ground and expand my repertoire.

I need to be relaxed to be creative, at which point my productivity increases and ideas flow freely. Experimenting with different media helps me to expand my knowledge and direction, my favourite medium being ink-painting.

The objective is to draw in the spectator to connect with the beauty of form, line and contrast.

My painting and drawings are Figurative Abstract, and my sculptures follow traditional plaster techniques.

Philosophically speaking, my art is “The pleasure of seeing and making”.
